<p>The other night, Charlie and I were sitting out on the deck. Dinner was finished and the kids were doing the dishes. So we were just chillaxing. But after we&#8217;d been there 4-5 minutes, things started falling on us. At first I thought it was rain, because it was SUPPOSED to rain all day but had just spit randomly instead. But it wasn&#8217;t rain. It was big and loud enough to bounce.</p>
<p>Charlie picked up one of the projectiles and saw that it was an acorn cap. At about the same time, he noticed that there was a squirrel high in the oak tree, perched on the one branch that hung over the deck. And he was apparently chowing down. Because as he sat there, an acorn cap fell at our feet just about every second. And that&#8217;s not counting the ones that landed on us. The dogs thought treats were falling from the sky and got busy eating the organic missiles.</p>
<p>All this reminded me of a post that I wrote over two years ago about the Ninja Squirrel at our old house. At the time, I thought he was tough and cocky. I even made up a song about him.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><strong>I’m talkin bout </strong><strong>Ninja Squirrel</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img title="Ninja squirrel stealing from our birdfeeder. He's bulking up for the squirrels' ultimate attempt at world domination." src="http://redclaydiaries.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/dscn1070_edited-222x300.jpg" alt="Ninja squirrel stealing from our birdfeeder. He's bulking up for the squirrels' ultimate attempt at world domination." width="222" height="300" /></p>
<p style="text-align: center;">(Which for some reason makes me think of the theme from Shaft.)</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><em><strong>Squirrel!</strong></em></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><strong>He’s a bad mother–</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><em><strong>Shut yo mouth!</strong></em></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><strong>Only talkin bout Squirrel.</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><em><strong>We can dig it!</strong></em></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><em><strong></strong></em><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #800000;"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">(<a href="http://redclaydiaries.com/2009/05/13/naked-reptiles-and-mercenary-rodents/"><span style="color: #800000; text-decoration: underline;">Check out</span></a></span> the whole post here</span></span>.)</strong></span></p>
<p>But he has nothing on the tree rats that we have at this house. As far as I can tell, they NEVER touch the ground. Instead, they practice acrobatics jumping from treetop to treetop. The old Ninja Squirrel mostly just stole bird food. I suspect these guys are hungrily eyeing our small dog, Scruff.</p>
<p>(Don&#8217;t tell Charlie; if he finds out they want Scruff, he&#8217;ll put him outside all the time with a bow around his neck and a carrying handle.)</p>
