Looking at snow through old lady glasses

What’s new with me lately?

Tuesday night Charlie picked up our wonderful friend Simon at the airport. Simon’s from England, and apparently he controls the weather. Because last month they had record-breaking snow there. And only three days after his arrival, we had –

But first, let me tell you about one day later:

Wednesday night I picked up my new glasses:

Cute, huh? I like how they LOOK. But I’m still not sure I enjoy how they SEE. That’s because they’re progressive lenses.

a.k.a. INVISIBLE BIFOCALS. a.k.a. OLD LADY GLASSES.

Thus, every waking moment since Wednesday, I’ve been tilting my head up and down… and up and down…. and up and down… trying to focus on the TV, the road, the pastor at church, the floor, the kids, my iPhone, the computer… In fact, at this VERY moment, I’m gazing intently at my laptop, trying not to squint.

Hello headache, nice to see you again.

But I’m not whining.

Okay, I totally am.

In better news, the snow that Simon attracted from England arrived Friday afternoon. Our county cleverly cancelled school that MORNING. So after 468 “Mom, where’s the snow on the radar NOW?” questions from Hannah, we finally went out for a late lunch. And then we got the best dessert EVER.

By 3 pm, we were home and kids were bundled and outside in it. As soon as enough was on the ground, Hannah started sledding. LC joined her after awhile. And Abby? What did she do? This:

Abby built snowmen. From 3 to about 7:30 pm, when we made her come in for dinner. By then it was dark and she had created a snowmob. Sentinels under the streetlight, they guarded our yard for the night.

After our late dinner, I made my first-ever batch of snow cream. Then we kept the kids up late watching the uber-long Olympic opening ceremonies. But on Saturday they were STILL up before 8:00, begging to go out and play.

Here’s Saturday, before the sun melted the snow off the trees:

And my lovely Snow Angel, Hannah:

The amazing father of my children bundled himself up and took the kids to the field down the road, where they sledded (and built more snowmen) for THREE HOURS. Happy Valentine’s Day to ME.

To recap:

Englishman, Old Lady Glasses, Snowmob, Valentine’s Day

I hope your week was at least half as fun as mine!

    Hi Steph,
What a lovely accounting of the day. A very fun day!
Except for the headache. I can relate. I have old lady glasses, too. The difference is, I am an old lady. LOL! Those progressive lenses, however, hide it well. :-)

Oh, it could be SO much worse! You could be wearing coke-bottle glasses instead of old lady glasses. You can kinda play down the old lady glasses as being cool. But there’s no help for coke-bottle glasses. :-)

What Sarah said, only coke bottle bottom wearers eventually have to have bifocals too. I hate to break it to Sarah right here. Progressive lenses are awesome. I have the widest version you can get because it can be frustration to have to turn your head like you say to get to the tiny spot where something is clear. It’s like working in a tunnel for those who don’t get it. These lenses do cost more but so worth it. Steph, if you don’t get better in a few days, go back and have the axis checked. Mine have often been made wrong. I guess mine is tricky. It’s like they make them sideways or something. Once that was fixed it was all good.

I always enjoy reading about your girls and having a bit of fun right along with you!

Beautiful photos! We’re in central Florida and all we got was rain.

None of the snow stopped by south Texas, so we were at the park in shorts yesterday playing with sand. I’m never quite sure whether I love that about Texas winters or hate it.

Your daughter’s snowman is a masterpiece, by the way!

Well good and good. The pics are great.

Are your kids home today? Mine are. Ron asked last night, “Do y’all have school tomorrow?” Rachel says, “Well of course not! It’s the day after Valentines Day!”

Can’t argue with that logic. No really, I’ve tried. You can’t.

At least with all that nodding up and down you must seem like a very agreeable person now. Not that you weren’t before, of course.

I can’t help but giggle over the glasses part. I’ve just recently had to start wearing reading glasses. It’s driving me crazy. It just doesn’t FEEL right, but everyone tells me that I’ll “get used to it”. I get a headache either way I look at it! ;-) Just wait till we start griping about those false teeth that don’t fit just right! HA!

What a delightful surprise to get all that snow!
The pictures of Abby and Hannah are so cute.
How fun for everyone. I’d love to see more pictures if you have them.

Your glasses look great. I hope you get used
to them quickly. Getting older is great fun, isn’t it? Love you, Mom

OLD LADY GLASSES??? Watch who you’re calling an old lady, BobbleHead. Shall we compare prescriptions? You know, sort of like old people compare …. nevermind.

The glassed LOOK great! I hope the headache goes away very soon.
Just so you know… my snow envy is getting worse by the second with these types of pics & posts!
