So much more than a day off

Hannah: Mom, I know what I’m gonna do Monday: Pray about Martin Luther King.

Me: You mean thank God for him?

Hannah: Uh huh.

I kind of expected the kids to look at today as just another chance to sleep in. But I was pleasantly surprised.

Abby: Oh Mommy! I learned that Martin Luther King changed the world! If he didn’t I wouldn’t get to go to school with my friends Anna and Alayna!

Hannah: And I wouldn’t be friends with Larissa!

If Martin Luther King Jr were alive today, I don’t know how much he’d think has been gained through his efforts.

But I suspect that he’d pleased that my daughters…

Are shocked – SHOCKED – that people ever had to go to different bathrooms. AND USE DIFFERENT FOUNTAINS?! Madness!

Really have no idea why anyone would choose to hate their best friends because of something so “DUMB” (their word) as melatonin concentration.

Choose a Barbie from the Aisle of Pink in the toy store based on her outfit and her smile, NOT how well her skin matches theirs.

I realize that the struggle for equal civil rights for all people is a long way from over.

But certain battles – at least in the Barbie aisle and my daughters’ classrooms here in rural Georgia – seem to be turning in our favor.

Thank you, MLK.

PS Hundreds of thousands of people in Haiti are fighting an entirely different battle today – for survival. We’re praying and sending help through our church, 12Stone. (12Stone is partnering with World Hope International to get aid on the ground where it’s needed most. 100% of contributions made through 12Stone go directly to World Hope.)

Born and raised in the South, I grew up with the idea of separation branded into my brand, sometimes overtly and sometimes subtly. As your children point out, together is better, and Martin Luther King Jr. had a lot to do with that.

Thanks for leaving me a link :) I love the conversation that you had with your girls and appreciate that you took the time to have it. I’m sure Dr. King wouldn’t want kids out of school today… we should all be having those conversations while they are at home.

I love it that your girls are confused by segregation. I love it that they are told of it and find it completely ridiculous. Because it was and is. Great post, lady.
