Hot and cold running at the mouth

June 15th, 2009 · 15 Comments · Humor: You're laughing WITH me, right?, Linkiness, Only as old as you feel, Roaming the blogosphere

Every once in awhile, in an attempt to be “hip” and “cool,” I change the channel from “Classic Rock” to a Top 40 music station. It is educational, let me tell you. To illustrate, this line from a popular song:

“Shh, Girl! Shut your lips! Do the ‘Helen Keller’ and talk with your hips!”

Does anyone else find that in really bad taste?

All this pop acculturating has also meant that I now know who Katy Perry is.

Knowledge that I WISH I could erase from my mind. You guys, for a recent awards show the girl dressed as some kind of pornographic Chita Rivera, and descended onto the stage in a giant banana. She WACK.

So when Charlie showed me this video that someone had recently sent to him, I was so very pleased to discover a Katy Perry Alternative.

Check it out.

Stick around to the end for the drum solo. It is spectacular.

Now Los Colorados just need to do a cover of “I Kissed a Girl.” It would make so much more sense to me.

(Have I properly conveyed what an old fogey I have become? Yes? Good.)

One more thing:

Does anyone know why a band from the Ukraine is named Los Colorados? Another question to keep me up nights.

PS I will never hear that song the same way again. The Slavic accent has burrowed deeply into my brain.

If you’re anything like me… You’re welcome.

I love that this song is officially ruined in my head. Not that it was anything of value before that could be ruined, but you know what I mean.
And I adore that accordion player–playing right into the stereotype I had of Yugoslavia.
p.s. I think I’m an old fogey too, well before my time of course.

My daughter is always playing that stuff when we go somewhere in her car. Normally she does the quick-draw to turn down the radio when she knows it’s an appaling song, but sometimes she’s not fast enough and I’ll say, ‘did they just drop an F-bomb?’

We refer to that suff as the ‘crappy-rappy’ station.

That band will forever be the standard of “Yeah, but are they whiter than…”

    Extremely, tragically fish belly white.

I have never heard that song. If they don’t play it on Radio Disney, I don’t know it.

    Jo-
Glad to ruin it for you. ;) Also, UKRAINE. Not Yugoslavia. Yugoslavians are cool. (Have I mentioned that I’m part Serbian?)

    Annie-
Crappy-Rappy. I like that. I’m sure I’ll be using it with my kids.

    Katdish-
I imagine Katy Perry will never be heard on Radio Disney. At least not without a “Radio Disney Edit”.

But I promise, when you DO hear the real song, the Ukrainian accented version will totally overwhelm HER voice.

Charlie just told me that all he had to do was SEE the link to the video, and now he has it running through his head. You’re welcome, Sweetheart.

One of my biggest regrets in life right now is that I can’t find the polka version of “Livin’ La Vida Loca” on youtube for you. Also incredibly funny.

I’ve often wondered why more people don’t play the accordian. Now I know. Thanks for that.

    “Callie”-
Your problem is your lack of opposable thumbs. You should ask someone (like maybe Helen?) to find the link for you.

    Lianne-
Just makes you wanna get up and dance, huh?

    Joyce-
What? You mean that’s not hip?

    Wendy-
You’re welcome. My mom took accordion lessons as a kid. I think I’m glad she didn’t keep it up.

Callie, I’m sorry, I checked, but I couldn’t find it either.

Unfortunately I have been aware of Katy Pery for some time. She is the new skank and the worst part is she did her debut album as a Christian artist.

Yeah you read that right. After being poorly received as a Christian artist she swung 180 into skankdom to get her fame on.

These guys are cracking me up!

Oh, don’t even get me started on the bad messages to imparted to children in these lovely songs…I did a nice Katy Perry rant on my own blog at some point but I’m too lazy to go looking for it. I think I yelled at my radio when I heard the Helen Keller lyric for the first time, too. My current favorite is “My Life Would Suck Without You.” Ahhh…pure poetry. I used to like Kelly Clarkson, too…boo.

See? Don’t get me started. Someday when my kids are old enough to decide what is good and not good to listen to, it’s outta my hands. But while they are tiny…it’s Christian radio and stuff I own that I know is clean. I know a lot of people accuse Christian radio as being “boring,” “cheesy,” blah, blah, blah, but my kids dig it and most of the time I do, too. And we don’t get Radio Disney ’round these parts…

I’m an alternative girl and when I’m not listening to that it’s kiddie music, so I have no idea who Katy Perry is. But I freakin’ love that video! That was awesome! I got to find out who those guys are! Thank you!

Twelve hours later, and I’m STILL singing that stupid lyric in my head!

And I can do the accent perfectly–out loud as well as mentally. It’s a curse.
