This is me, checking in

Last day of school? Check.

Rainy afternoon with kids communing with Cartoon Network? Check.

Three separate awards ceremonies for three kids on three separate days? Check, check and check.

Three opportunities to get a numb butt from sitting on those hard metal chairs? Check.

Three yearbooks sticky with cake and/or ice cream from class parties? Check.

(But when did they start giving out –oops, I mean SELLING– yearbooks in elementary school? What’s next? Class rings for kindergarteners?)

A dog systematically licking yearbooks? Che— HEY! Bob?! Those yearbooks are NOT YOURS!

Two of three kids who wanted to go to school all day today and yesterday, even though it wasn’t required? Check.

Weird. Charlie and I agreed that neither of US would’ve gone.

Every counter, table, and area of carpet piled with award certificates, art projects, yearbooks, report cards, #2 pencils, blank paper, and leftover single packs of Oreos crushed to powder in the bottom of a backpack? Check.

Cheerful kids who aren’t yet sick enough of each other to pick any fights? Ch– Um, hold on. Nah, that was just a random holler– Check.

One mother who’s not sure what to do with the kids this evening, much less all summer? Check.

Help. Me.

Thank GOD I’m not the only one with this stuff spread all over!!!

My 9 year old son was up at 7:30 am on the first day off of school, with his face buried in a book that he couldn’t wait to read! I was like “umm.. wha…?” Couldn’t drag him out of bed for school most days and reading wasn’t his favorite subject. Weird indeed!

    Great post.

I can’t tell you what to do with them all summer, not being a parent and all, but I can tell you what my mom did to me when I said I was bored: she made me dust. She said that if I couldn’t keep myself occupied, she had plenty of extra chores that I could fill the void with. I told her I was bored once: after that, I would imagine shapes in the cracks of the ceiling the way some kids do clouds before I would use the b word again. That’s right…in Momma’s house the b-word was bored.

Ooo, I like Helen’s idea. I’ve got to steal that. Sign them up for swim lessons like my mom did, and she made us do workbook pages and reading every day EVEN on vacation. She’s pure evil. Ok, maybe she just cared about our education. Check out the family fun website (http://familyfun.go.com/) for craft ideas. I’d plug myself but that’s just too mercenary for me.

If Helen’s idea doesn’t work, you could always get a velcro wall. They may still complain, but once they’re stuck to the wall, you can leave the room and don’t have to hear the complaining.

Seriously! I am totally relating to you and Jason right now. Why did I have to keep sending glue, crayons, and looseleaf paper for you people if you were going to bring home twice what I sent???

We have made it through day 1 of summer without anyone bleeding or the police being called. So far, so good.

What you have to understand is that when a child says “I’m bored.” he’s not complaining, he’s boasting.

Amen to the yearbook thing. I thought this year’s books were a bit of a stretch at $10 apiece. Next year they want 20! Hello? This is elementary school, people!

Oh, and we still have another day & a half after Mem. Day. What’s up with that?

I have no advice. But I bet Bob would know what to do. That is, once he finishes shredding the precious elementary school mementos.

I can’t believe you’re done with school already! We have like 5 weeks left. I had to buy a yearbook for my son too – 3rd grade. He begged. The ‘free’ public school is breaking my bank this year.

I agree with the whole yearbook thing. My daughter’s in the first grade and came home with a yearbook last week. Seriously? I never got a yearbook in the first grade. I wouldn’t know what to DO with a yearbook in the first grade.

But I’m looking forward to her being in second grade, when she’ll no doubt want her tongue pierced and a cell phone.

You named your dog Bob? I have too many family members named Bob to do that. Then again, I AM in Idaho, so we all have mono-syllabic names up here. I’m jealous, my school is year-round for the next. . . till I die?
