Hey!
Just continuing the theme from yesterday. You know, of naming my post to alliterate with the day of the week?
I wonder what I should do for Saturday… Sleep-in Saturday? Silly Saturday? No, too obvious.
I’ll have to think this over some more.
Anyway, I picked a flashback for today because I FINALLY learned how to use our scanner. A dozen photo albums just WAITING to be mined, and up until now, no clue how to get them from album to computer.
But finally, thanks to Charlie … and about 37 different steps … I now have a grand total of TWO pictures scanned. But I’m okay with that, cuz they’re GOOD pictures.
As I’ve mentioned, I came of age in the 80s and 90s. So I’ve really enjoyed the trend among a lot of my fellow bloggers: posting pics of themselves in all their big-haired, skinny-jeaned, acid-washed glory.
Today, not to be left out, I went searching my albums for hair-up-in-scrunchies, pegged Levis, and big neon plastic neon earrings.
But I don’t know… It seems like all the pictures of ME from back then had a different vibe.

What do you think?

Pretty cool, huh? This was me circa 1992
NO, I haven’t had any special operations. But have I mentioned that I was a tomboy growing up? Well, I was.
And even after I discovered the wonders of makeup and clothes that fit, I still seemed to find any excuse to dress as a guy.
This time? I was in my early 20’s and living with a family who had a skateboarder son still in high school. Halloween + poor part-time Spanish teacher = creative costuming. So I borrowed his clothes.
My friend Sherene and I went out trick-or-treating like this. Oddly, we scared all the children. In fact, whenever we approached, they dropped their goodie bags and ran.
I have no idea why.

Anyone?

Next time: Me as a Jamaican beach bum! And peeking out of my shirt collar: eyeliner chest hair!
(And that time I kept being approached by women named Stella, saying something about “getting their groove back.”)
(…Weird.)

I don’t think we have any pics…..there was the Halloween I dressed as a nun in a minidress, but somehow my parents did not consider it a moment to document proudly for posterity.

hmmm, is it me or do you look like the love child of Leonardo Dicaprio and Johny Depp in those pictures?

Helen- I can’t imagine why your parents weren’t tremendously proud…
Nick – Well, I guess if I’m gonna be a guy, I should be happy I’m a handsome guy.

Oh, goodie! Annie went there, so I don’t have to! All I can say is,
“DUDE!”

This is pretty much what I wore to school every day of high school. Minus the hat. And the skateboard, although I did have one. I just couldn’t ride it very well. I still have my brown Vans…boy’s shoes! But they’re so darn comfortable. And I wore boy’s jeans, too. Yet I still managed to have boyfriends…that always amazed my mother.
Maybe Frank can teach me how to work the scanner sometime soon!

Nothing like a little teenage angst.
I’m reading this while watching a countdown of the 100 greatest one-hit wonders of the eighties.
I feel old now.

Annie and Katdish said what I thought! They only left out this: “I didn’t know Kurt Cobain and Rosie O’Donnell knew each other.”
Wow. I’m going to go find my husband’s old Pearl Jam album and rock out and be angry at the world.

I wouldn’t have recognized you if I had
passed you on the street. That is some outfit!

Trying to reconcile this photo with the image I have of you…I’m struggling. Perhaps the Jamaican Beach bum with eyeliner chest hair photo will pull it all together for me.
I had a baby in 1990 and I could post a picture of myself sitting at my kitchen table when she was 10 days old and while you wouldn’t mistake me for a guy you might mistake me for an 87 year old woman. I obviously won’t be posting that and it’s not because I can’t work the scanner.

I’m jealous!
I was a skater chick in school….oddly I was attracted to you in that first picture….
Maybe I shouldn’t have admitted that….
Anyway…..I wish I had all my old albums here with me, but somethings had to be left behind.
I could shock a few people.

Thanks everyone, for all the “encouragement.” Truly inspiring.
Beth, yet another reason why I like you. I wish I’d kept my Vans.
Annie, Katdish, Lianne – Really? What did my friend Sherene ever do to you? I always thought she didn’t quite pull off the Skater Boi look — not butch enough. As for Cobain… He did a song called Smells Like Teen Spirit, right? And I did a post called Smells Like Tween Attitude… So we’re virtually twins!
Joyce, I’m sure the chest hair pic will clear everything up.
And Nina… I’m a little scared.

I tried to wear my old Vans a while back. My teen daughter gave me “the look”. If you don’t know the “dear Lord, my mother is such an embarassment, there isn’t enough money in savings to pay for both my college AND therapy–what am I going to do?” look, well then God bless you. Since she didn’t like the Vans on me, I just went and put on my old cheerleader uniform before I walked in youth group wit her. Problem solved…
