Shhh. They’re coming.
I only have a few seconds before they find me.
I know I begged Sunday night for a snow day Monday. I KNOW. So I really shouldn’t complain.
I mean, LOOK at it. Gorgeous.

But today’s TUESDAY. And the children are STILL HERE.
They migrate from room to room, shedding clutter in their wake. And when they’re not destroying the house, they’re begging to go outside in the “snow.”
“Snow” that is now technically more like “ice.”
(But LC whining that he’d actually tried to make a snow angel in it? FUNNY.)
***
Sunday night, as snow blanketed the ground in big, fluffy flakes (for the first time in at least three years), all five of us were giddy.
Everyone wanted to go out and play.

Getting them bundled in their snow pants, boots, gloves, hats and coats was filled with fun and anticipation.
The FIRST time.
Not so much the second, third, and fourth times.
And 12 sets of things to dry, one slush-covered mudroom (thank GOD for a mudroom), and three voices raised (four separate times) in a chorus of “My hands are numb/Daddy sent my sled into a thornbush/I want hot chocolate!” later,
I. Am. Over. It.
***
Today they’re begging to go out with shovels and build a snow fort (a suggestion made last night by ME, clearly influenced by dryer fumes).
And I have things to do. Many, many things to do. Like blogging. And another writing job. And washing dishes. And doing laundry. And vacuuming.
You can talk all you want about making memories and enjoying the moment, but I’m feeling all full up of memories, thankyouverymuch.
I’m grateful for the answer to my prayer for a Snow Day. Really, I am.
But I didn’t ask for Snow DaySSS.
My new prayer today?
Hide Me.

See? Those are the things that make me think I might not like snow. I think it would be lovely to look at, but not so delightful to hold or drag into the house. I’m thinking, wet and cold. And tons of work for mom.
But I would like to see it once. And I think I’d like to build a snowman. Once.
Hang in there, girl. This too shall pass.

I am not a lover of snow. Then why do I live in Chicago? Penance…..No, just kidding. I love Chicago, in spite of , not because of, snowy winters. I am okay with a little dusting, but nothing that requires shovels. Or brooms. Or brushing off the car before driving. Or flooding the basement if it thaws too fast. Or icing over causing me to slip and hurt myself. Did I mention that I really don’t like snow?

See, you CAN have too much of a good thing. Especially when no one really agrees on whether it is actually a GOOD THING to get snow in March. in Georgia. Or anywhere, for that matter!
It goes without saying that we got a lot of this alleged good thing up here in Maine too. I think if we could just sit at our laptops with coffee in hand and write our little hearts out while looking at the gorgeous landscape outside, it would be nothing short of dreamy. But those KIDS complicate that scene just a little bit, eh?

See, we could have used a few more days of the snow. It’s just so painful to see it fall, see it melt, hear them wail, and clean up the mud. There’s pain either way, eh?

I gotta tell you Steph…it’s wuuuunderful being able to leave the teenage kids at home and go away for the weekend. Oh yeah, that’s right. Your kids are just wee ones. Maybe in a couple of years….

I love snow. Really, I do. But this is the first winter that I’ve spent at home couped up with the kids the whole time…and I am over it as well. Although strangely…no snow here in Indiana! Just nasty cold. Spring, where ARE you???

I suppose you don’t want to hear “He never gives us more than we can handle” and all that, right? Right??
Ok- dumb gorgeous snow! How dare they cancel school for two whole days! What IS God thinking??? More time with her kids???
Bah humbug.

Oh, Evenshine, I totally agree with you!
I felt really dumb complaining after I’d ASKED GOD for a snow day.
But it WAS what I was feeling yesterday, and getting it on paper made it a lot easier to truly enjoy the day that I had.
Sorry if I made it appear that I believe God was giving more than I could bear. It was more like, “God, I know you can empower me to handle this, so PLEASE DO!”

So, how often do you ever get snow days in Georgia? We haven’t had one snow day in KS this year – 1. It hasn’t snowed enough. 2. We got us some snowplows!
We’re all looking forward to the 70 degrees they’re predicting for tomorrow. Should melt off what little snow we have left from the weekend.

I fell in love with this post.
1. Playing in the snow with kids is absolutely wonderful.
2. I live in Minneapolis, MN so that 2nd and 3rd and 100th time get even better the more you go out … kind of.
3. At least you didn’t have loads of snow, have it warm up to 40 degrees (… yeah, I said warm up … and yes, people were wearing shorts for those 2 weeks up here in Minnesota), and then snow on you again … it was like spring had finally arrived and then BAM!
Anyway, ENJOY the snow! It is a blessing in disguise (which I’m sure you’ve figured out).
