Fall Back x Morning Person = Double the Cheerfulness!

November 3rd, 2008 · 6 Comments · Parenting

I should start by saying that by nature, I am a Morning Person.

I’m the one you Night People can’t understand. I can take about 15 seconds to go from sound asleep to wide awake. First thing in the morning, I’m usually full of grand ideas and witty comments. I could solve the world’s problems between 7 and 10 a.m.

If they would just wake up and listen to me.

However. I am married to a Night Person. And after almost 15 years together, I’ve adapted. Mostly by staying up late to hang out with him.

And since I regularly stay up late, I’m a little slower to awaken. Charlie likes this, because it means I generally keep my witticisms and wisdom To My Self until he’s had his first cup of coffee.

In fact, I’ve spent so long being quiet in the morning that now I kind of crave the silence.

I’m reminded that this is a learned behavior on mornings like this one – the first school day after the time change.

My Morning, by Steph (former Morning Person)

5:35  Wake up. Wonder if, even though I stayed up till 11, I should use the time change to start new habit of Getting Up Early and Being Productive. Close eyes to ponder this question.

6:30  Hear Rolling Stones’ “Satisfaction” on clock radio. Sleep must’ve made decision for me. Get up and stumble toward bathroom.

Pounced on by Morning Person Hannah.

“Hi Mom!!! Good morning! I need clean clothes! Are there any skirts in the laundry room?”

Whaaaa? I squint to focus on her face in the dark. All I can see is white teeth in a huge smile.

“Okay. Just give me a minute.”

Wash face, take morning meds. Realize that I must’ve been this obnoxious as a kid. Know that sister would consider this payback for all the times I pelted her with pillows to get her up.

***

6:40 Go to girls’ room with clothes from laundry room. Notice Abby in bed with covers over her head.  Hannah jumps up from floor where she was playing.

“Hi Mom! Ooohh, I love that skirt! It’ll go great with this top! Do you have any leggings clean?! Oh, and Abby won’t get up! I told her it was time to get up and she wouldn’t!”

“Mommmmmmmmmmmma, why is Hannah so mean in the morning?”

“Hannah, it’s 6:35. Let your sister sleep.”

Oh, Poor Abby. Realize I owe my sister a big apology. (Sorry Suzy!)

“And stay in here until 7. I need some time alone. That’s why I (try to) get up earlier than you.”

***

7:00  Sitting on couch writing. Hear someone skipping down the hall.

“MOM! It’s 7:00!!!! I was playing Barbies! Wanna see the new fashion outfits I created?! What do you think I should have for breakfast?! Am I bringing my lunch today?!”

I know I made this bed. Now I just wish Hannah would let me lie in it.

Ha, ha…I’m NOT a morning person at all. I’m better when nobody speaks to me for about my first two hours awake. It takes me about 5 hours to go from asleep to awake, a very slow process.

@domesticfringe: Yeah, my husband is like you. He cannot cope with Hannah’s morning cheer.

She’s mentally exhausting for me, but mostly I can laugh. Charlie becomes very, shall we say, “cranky?”

You had me laughing all through this…but then I got to the very last part…”I just wish Hannah would let me lie in it…” and I cracked up.

    You. Are. Brilliant.

Somehow kids have a way of changing EVERYTHING. I used to be a morning person before kids. Now I’m still a morning person because of kids, but I’d rather not be!

I am totally a morning person.
My husband is totally a night person.
I totally stay up to hang out with him.
I keep telling myself that I will be able to return to those cheerful morning days…
Are you trying to tell me that I should give up this hope?
We have only been married for about 12 years. I still have a few years to curb the tendency, right?

hehe! Unfortunately I’m a night person who birthed two morning people. I can do mornings but includes caffine and sugar, and I hate afternoons.

But your mornings sound wonderful. What cute girls you have!
