Capturing the Essence of Autumn in the South

September 25th, 2008 · 11 Comments · Feeling writerly, The South: Fixin to bust out the sweet tea

Now I don’t claim to be a poet. But I’ve decided to take up the challenge made by Robin at Pensieve in her monthly…

This month I’m learning a new poetic form: the CINQUAIN.

It has bunches of definitions, but I chose the one used by most schoolchildren here in the States:

1 Noun
2 Two Adjectives
3 Three Gerunds (verbs ending in “ing”)
4 Four-word descriptive phrase
5 Noun – another name for Line 1

And the theme is autumn, my favorite season — ragweed be d***ed.

Even after eleven autumns here in Georgia, I still get giddy at the change of seasons. The summer-long slog of humidity, heat, bugs, and air conditioning is gradually drawing to a close.

And now, for your enjoyment, my attempts at poetic license:

Sunbeams
Cloudless, Bright
Slanting, Piercing, Warming
The season’s triumphal entry
Daylight

Ragweed
Callous, Cruel
Pollinating, Permeating, Suffocating
Traps me in the house
&*#%@

Wind
Dry, Crisp
Swooping, Stirring, Singing
Leaves lose their grip
Gusts

Deer
Whitetailed, Alert
Browsing, Swishing, Watching
Blends into leafless trees
Wildlife

Coffeecup
Warm, Aromatic
Comforting, Steaming, Caffeinating
My hands embrace it
Bliss

Autumn
Southern, Subtle
Cooling, Sharpening, Inviting
We eat dinner outside
Fall

THANK YOU!

Those were really great! I can’t resist trying one
about mornings as my rotten friend drags me out of bed to go to the gym at 5am

    Mornings
    Dark, Gloomy
    torturing, Uninviting, disgusting
    The dreaded horn beckons me
    Sleep

Your sister Suzy says I’ll learn to love exercise, I’m not buying it.

You are gifted! I can relate about the ragweed one. Maybe that is why I have felt so crappy the last few days. Fall…bittersweet.

Oh, my…you’ve hit it out of the ballpark on your first try! Well done, Steph!!

The first one contains my favorite of all of them: “The season’s triumphal entry”…it’s so lovely.

All of these combined paint an almost complete picture of the season; there’s nothin’ much better than a warm cup of coffee on a chilly autumn morn and you’ve given me a pleasant reminder of that :) .

Can’t wait til NEXT month to see if you’re this prolific! :)

Great job! My faves? The one about ragweed (LOL!) and the one about coffee – bliss is right! Thanks!
