Well, after all the planning and preparation, tonight’s open house was pretty uneventful. Upon meeting the kids’ teachers, I think they might be just perfect. Charlie’s teacher seems tough and organized. Hannah’s seems really kind. And Abby’s seems to be very savvy. I’m pretty happy about the outcome.
As for my other commitment, I think God is revealing a little of his plan. Three years ago, Hannah and Charlie each had a really close friend in class who we got to know, along with their parents. They haven’t been in the same classroom with that particular friend since. Until this year. Pretty cool.
Husband Charlie (not to be confused with Son Charlie) is glad to be home. He was in Louisiana for a family wedding. At this moment, I’m watching the two Charlies have a “wrestle prayer.” That’s where Little Charlie says his prayers with his dad — as they attempt to pin each other.
An excerpt of Little Charlie’s prayer – with as much inflection as I can put in print:
Dear [argh] God, [boom!] thank you for bringing Dad [ergh!] home safely. [Aaaah, aaaah, aaaah! Let go! I will escape from your evil clutches!] Thank you for all the things I got to do today. [No! no! You cannot conquer me!] I’m sorry for [Really Dad, that tickles! Oooh, I was lying! Ha HA, I got you!] all the things I did bad today. Please bless our day tomorrow. Help me have good [I'm never letting go! You're stuck with me forever!] dreams tonight. In Jesus’ name, Amen. [I WIN! I WIN!]
His dad does the same thing for his prayer, with the sound effects and everything.
I’ll never understand boys. But they make me laugh.

That’s a creative prayer time. God has to be impressed with your understanding a boy’s “learning style”. HYSTERICAL!

Thanks Maggie. I’m not sure if my strategy is impressive, so much as opportunistic — Daddy ends up in charge of bedtime, and I get to keep my head down and go “off duty” earlier.
